JMSDF’s need for an ASW patrol aircraft led to the U.S. Navy providing a Grumman Albatross, which was remodelled into the UF-XS experimental aircraft at Shin Meiwa’s Konan plant. First flown in Dec. 1962, the UF-XS was tested till 1964, leading to the manufacture of the PS-1 flying boat.
